Key Texts: Hebrews 10: 19-20 and John 14: 1-6 (NLT)
Key Verse: John 14: 6 : Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Message: A new and living way (The New Covenant) in Christ became a perfect, timeless and trustworthy replacement for the Old Testament (or Old Covenant) rituals and priesthood.
- Matthew 27:51: “At that moment (when Jesus sacrificed His life), the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom”.
- Mark 15:38: “And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.”.
- Luke 23:45: “…and suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.”.
The significance of the tearing of the veil (or curtain)
- Fulfilment of the Old Covenant
It signifies the fulfilment of the Old Covenant (particularly the Mosaic Covenant- the Law) and the religious system it represented, which separated God from His people and the rest of humanity.
- Removal of spiritual blindness
The veil is also a metaphor for spiritual blindness and separation from God due to sin. The tearing of the veil in Christ removes this spiritual blindness, allowing true believers to understand spiritual truths and see God directly.
- Direct access to God
The torn veil (or curtain) represents that the way to the Holy of Holies, God’s presence, is now open for everyone in the world through Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and man, without a need for any other human mediator (pastor, prophet, teacher, evangelist or apostle -1 Timothy 2:5).
- Jesus’ sacrifice
The tearing of the veil (or curtain) at Jesus’ death dramatically shows that His sacrifice, through the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement (penalty, plea, and pardon) for our sins.
- New Covenant
The event established the new covenant through Christ, providing access to the Father by the Holy Spirit.
- Priesthood of all believers
With the barrier removed, all true believers and followers of Christ have become royal priests who pray for others and the world (1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6).
